Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli 2004, Tuscany - 750 ml

Price: $120.00

Tenuta Il Poggione

Established by Lavinio Franceschi In the late 19th century in the town of Sant Angelo in Colle, Il Poggione remains a benchmark property for fine, traditionally made Brunellos capable of ageing exquisitely. Robert Parker comments: “I can’t think of too many properties in the world producing wines of this level at these prices with an established track record going back 40+ years.”  The Brunellos are fermented with the submerged cap method, a traditional style of vinification that is common in Piedmont, but not in Montalcino. The wines are subsequently aged four years in French oak casks, with the Riserva seeing a higher percentage of newer oak. Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli is produced only in the best years and in limited quantities. This wine comes exclusively from “I Paganelli” vineyard, the oldest vineyard on the estate, planted in 1964.

2004 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli

The Wine Advocate: The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli emerges from the glass with masses of scorched earth, leather, tar, licorice, menthol and dark fruit. For now, the Riserva is quite reticent and requires air, but with time its awesome richness and power come through in spades. This dark, brooding and authoritative Riserva from Il Poggione is simply gorgeous. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.   96 points

Stephen Tanzer: Good deep red. Sexy nose offers raspberry, spices, dried rose, cassis and minerals; reminds me of a top Pauillac. Then suave, complex and energetic in the mouth, offering wonderful precision to the intense red fruit, tobacco and floral flavors. Finishes long and vibrant, combining impeccable balance, enticing sweetness and firm, smooth tannins. This monumental Brunello will age for a long time. 95 points
