Vigneau-Chevreau Vouvray Sec “Cuvee Silex” 2009 - 750 ml

Domaine Vigneau-Chevreau, a family run estate since 1875, has 26 hectares planted to Chenin, the only grape allowed for the production of Vouvray.The grapes are hand-harvested at various levels of maturity to allow for the various styles of wine. Sec refers to this Vouvray being “dry,” and Cuvée Silex refers to the flinty stones that make up this part of the vineyard’s chalky soil, contributing a flinty, minerally, almost sea-briny nuance beneath the ripe apple and wildflower fragrance, and mildly tart, yet lush flavors on the palate. 

The Domaine is certified organic by Ecocert, but the vineyards are in fact tended biodynamically, which involves even stricter standards than organic winegrowing.  Although this method involves much more work and considerably lower yields, the benefits to the long term condition of the vineyards and the quality of the wines with their pure expression of the unique terroir, are dramatic.
